Dye VL uses light energy to target chromophores. These are the molecules that give a lesion its color. In vascular lesions this is the hemoglobin. In pigmented lesions it is melanin. These chromophores absorb the wavelengths of light causing the molecule to heat and break down. AFT uses a special filtering system to convert previously unusable short wavelength light into a part of the usable spectrum. The Long-pulse Nd:YAG 1064 emits infrared light into the target area. This light energy is then absorbed by the oxyhemoglobin (predominant protein in red blood cells) with relatively low absorption by the melanin pigment. Once absorbed, the temperature within the abnormal blood vessel increases causing it to shrink. Because the Long-pulse Nd:YAG 1064 emits highly controlled laser pulse, the untreated skin surface is left undamaged. In addition, the handpiece features a unique open-angle view with an aiming beam, which allows practitioners to easily visualize the target blood vessels underneath the skin.
